Why use the Laser?

At Mimi Smiles Dentistry, we know how critical it is to use the most advanced technologies to provide our patients with the highest level of care.  The Odyssey 2.4 G Diode Laser is a tool we use in our practice to dramatically increase the level of care provided to our patients.   Its innovative technology allows us, as clinicians, to perform procedures faster and more efficiently while being less invasive and less traumatic to the patient.  Clinical studies have found several advantages to using the laser including: killing the bacteria that causes gum disease and periodontal disease, removing inflammatory products, reduced post-operative pain, swelling, and bleeding,  improved healing and gingival health, and more effectively treating periodontal disease.   The overall benefit of using the diode laser is a more comfortable patient experience and improved patient health.

How does the laser work?

The laser uses light energy that transforms into heat, resulting in the vaporization of harmful bacteria cells.    Periodontal disease is an inflammatory condition caused by the presence of bacteria.  This is a chronic infection in your mouth.  The laser is used following conventional periodontal therapy to eliminate harmful bacteria and promote the regeneration of periodontal fibers.  Without treatment, teeth become loose and may eventually be lost.   There are several clinical studies performed over the past several decades that demonstrate these decontaminating and biostimulating effects.  

What is the laser used for?

There are several other procedures where the laser can be used: treatment of cold sores, papillomas, ankylosed tongue (“tongue tied”), gummy smile, crown lengthening procedures, biopsies, and abscesses.
